Information is one of the most important resources of the 21st century. The sciences as well as the economy expect graduates to be able to routinely use software programs and the Internet. It is also expected that they posses skills to learn in a self-organized manner. One of the prerequisites for these skills is the competent use of information. The many possibilities of digital information processing present new challenges to the users. The effective and efficient use of (electronic) information makes skills necessary for critical thinking and evaluating information. This study takes a look at information literacy of students of the University of Augsburg. The aim of the study is to discover, how students at our university work with scientific sources and information they need to accomplish a variety of tasks related to their studies. We want to find out how students conduct research and media they use for these tasks. Our goal is to uncover possible deficits students have in their use of information and scientific sources to be able to alleviate these difficulties by offering several services within the project i-literacy to be able to achieve high academic standards. We will propose suggestions as well as a model to foster information literacy following the results of our study.
